Roosevelt Elk of the Redwoods, Calif.; 2015; Nikon
GALLERY TITLE: ROOSEVELT ELK OF THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA REDWOOD PARKS: The Roosevelt Elk is the largest of the subspecies of elk in North America. They can be found primarily in the Olympic peninsula of Washington State and along the Northern California coast in the Redwood state parks region. I found them scattered along the Northern California Redwood parks area during a fall 2015 visit. This gallery features two herds that I observed - one at Elk Meadows along Highway 101 just south of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and the other the Humboldt Lagoons Beach State Park south of Orick just off Route 101.

The "Alpha Female" leads an obedient herd of elk cows from the tall grass of the Dry Lagoon up to the beach where the vegetation is more to the liking of the herd for feeding. Only a small portion of the herd that numbered approximately 30 elk cows is visible here. September 24, 2015. Nikon D7200 and Nikon 80-400 G AFS VR lens at 180mm (270 mm in 35mm equiv.)
