Utah Scenic Highway 12 features many scenic points, including some great Utah state parks in between. The sights vary from dramatic views of sandstone formations, to canyons and surrounding rocky areas with moonscape-like features, farmland and mountainous terrain covered with thousands of acres of Aspens. Several hours, if not multiple days, should be allotted to appreciate the many sights and points of interest along this scenic highway.
The first 'set' of colorful rock formations one sees traveling east on Highway 12 from its beginning at the intersection of Route 89 (near the town of Panguitch) is a portion of Red Canyon State Park. While the Red Canyon State Park extends north of Highway 12, one can stop along any of the roadside pull-offs or the park's visitor's center, roll down the window and shoot these interesting sandstone formations that come to life in low-light situations.
