Sloths like to demonstrate strange, slow-motion gymnastics when they're not sleeping. Shown here, a female with its baby.
Females usually have a baby about once a year after a six-month pregnancy. Naturalists who study their behavior report that the mother makes little if any attempt to protect its baby from falling. Thus, baby needs to hang on with its long claws as mom moves about and assumes constantly-changing strange positions. After about nine months the baby is on its own. October 31, 2009.
