Costa Rica - Butterfly Botanical Reserve - Click on tumbnails to see gallery pictures. : Butterfly & Aquatic Tropical Gardens - "Fincas Naturales", a conservation project by Green Hotels of Costa Rica, which includes the Hotel Si Como No that is directly across the street. This is a fascinating destination. Knowledgeable guides are standing by to help you. It's a great place to exercise your macro photography skills. I know nothing about butterflies. However, resident naturalist, Roy Morales was a great help and is a wealth of information. Please enjoy a sampling of butterflies. Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, September 2007.

Hotel Si Como No - Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures. : A wonderful resort and hotel that served as a comfortable, safe haven and base for our exploration of this fascinating country with its wildlife, culture and vegetation in September 2007. My wife and I look forward to returning and also staying at the two other sister properties in Costa Rica.

Viera Wetlands and Merritt Island NWR - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures. : A sampling of bird images from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge next to the Kennedy Space Center and the Viera Wetlands, Viera, FL - November 15-17, 2007. Locals report that mid-November is still a bit early to see some of the various species that migrate south for the winter. That said, it was still an entertaining visit to these two fine destinations.

Monument Valley, Arizona - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : Monument Valley and Monument Valley Tribal Park, seen often as the background for movies and commercials, is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation at the Arizona and Utah border between Kayenta, AZ and Mexican Hat, UT along Highway 163. Each rock formation has a name. To visit requires considerable effort as it's located in the middle of nowhere. Photos were taken on September 14, 2006 (with afternoon thunderstorms) and November 9, 2006 (in windy and dusty conditions affecting some images). The first four photos taken from outside of the "Tribal Park", the rest from within the park (small admission fee per person).

Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park, Utah - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : Bryce Canyon in southwest Utah is a treasure chest of unusual sandstone formations (called "Hoodoos") of stunning colors that constantly change throughout the day as sun angles change. Bryce Canyon is not actually a canyon, but an amphitheater-like area of the cliffs on the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, part of the large area in Arizona and Utah known as the Grand Staircase. Sandstone formations, constantly changing due to erosion, all seem to have their own "face" or unique characteristics. Some have been given names. The trails that decend through the Hoodoos into the canyon provide a very unusual experience for a hiker. At more than 8,000 feet in elevation, the hikes are strenuous but worth the effort. Images taken on September 18 and 19, 2006 with a Panasonic FZ50.

Red Canyon State Park, Utah - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : Red Canyon State Park in Utah is located in the Dixie National Forest just west and north of Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park, Red Canyon's much better-known neighbor. Seeing this area was an added bonus since it's located along Highway 12, the road to Bryce Canyon. While the park extends north of Highway 12, one can stop along any of the roadside pull-offs or the park's visitor's center, roll down the window and shoot these interesting sandstone formations that come to life in low-light situations. North Rim, Grand Canyon Nat'l Park - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : September 17, 2006. For those who have seen the Grand Canyon from the South Rim, where one must fight large crowds of tourists daily, the North Rim offers better scenery (my opinion), a quieter and more-relaxed setting and, most important, about a tenth of the number of visitors. My visit was on a clear crisp day with a bright sky. However, "prescribed burns" (the clearing of wild brush using fire just to the south of the Grand Canyon), created a hazy, smokey sky as the day progressed. The North Rim is far off the beaten path and takes some effort to reach. But it's worth it. All photos taken with a Panasonic FZ-50.

Zion Nat'l Park , Utah - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : Zion National Park, Utah, September 15-16, 2006 (last two images taken on November 7, 2006). An awesome place. Like many parks and places, many rock formations have well-known names. It's a beautiful place; the views are fantastic. Equally impressive is how user-friendly this park is; transportation and creature comfort ammenities are terrific. A hiker's paradise; some trails are very challenging and, frankly, dangerous to the those who are not sure footed. Images taken with a Panasonic FZ50.

US Military Academy, West Point, NY - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : United States Military Academy at West Point, New York - August 23, 2006. Truly a wonderful setting; rich in history and tradition. I regret not having a tripod for pictures inside the Cadet Chapel, a magnificient structure. Even after the events of September 11, 2001, visitors are still welcome (with cameras too). If you visit, take the 2-hour tour which includes both the Cadet Chapel and the Old Cadet Chapel. The 11am tour includes the cadets lining up for marching into the mess hall. Impressive. All photos taken with a Panasonic FZ-50.

Yosemite National Park, California - Click on thumbnails to see gallery pictures : Yosemite National Park, California, February 24-27,2009. My first visit to this great place. Despite winter, the park was easily accessible via Route 140 from Merced and the west through Mariposa (most of the other approaches to the park are closed in winter). The snow was still deep in many places, but the temperatures were very pleasant. No crowds and very light traffic at this time of year. The waterfalls were breathtaking due to snow melt (winter and spring months are best for this).

Your Bio

On "The Crocodile Man's" river boat exploring the Rio Grande de Tarcoles near the Pacific coast in Costa Rica in September 2007, I'm just a wannabe nature and scenery photographer enjoying a second childhood. It gives me great pleasure to point to a large print on the wall in my home and say, "That's a personal memory and I am sharing it with you. Enjoy".

This stuff, done right, is not easy (as I am learning). I have great respect for those accomplished photographers who really go the extra mile just for a chance at a great a shot. Please enjoy my humble photographic offerings. I welcome your comments. - James A. Farrell, North Kingstown, RI, USA (photo by Carol M. Farrell)
